Poppers is the street term for Nitrite inhalants, particularly amyl nitrite, butyl nitrite and isobutyl
nitrite. Although amyl nitrite is used therapeutically for the treatment of angina, amyl nitrite and
other nitrites are often used as recreational drugs. Like othter inhalants, nitrites produce intoxicating
effects when the vapours are inhaled. Some recreational nitrite users take the drug for its rapid euphoric
effect and intoxicating effects, while others use it to enhance sexual pleasure. They are popular in
the gay culture for use during sex, both for the euphoric "rush" and because they make the smooth muscles
in the anus relax.
